Steam Machine: early launch signals are good, despite the premium price

According to an independent analysis of the Steam Hardware Survey data, the Steam Machine 2 is selling better than expected - even at its high price. A new milestone in Valve's hardware offensive.

The fact

The Steam Machine 2 is launched. On July 19, 2026, Notebookcheck relays an analysis from the site Boiling Steam based on data from the Steam Hardware Survey (Valve's monthly hardware survey). Conclusion: the machine is selling « steadily » (regularly), despite its premium positioning.

Valve has not communicated any official sales figures. These estimates therefore come from a statistical cross-reference - to be taken with the usual precautions. But the analysis converges with another indicator: Valve's editorial strategy for the machine.

• Valve has positioned the Steam Machine 2 as a PC disguised as a console, with SteamOS 3 and Proton for Windows compatibility.
• No exclusives. As we wrote in a previous article (RPS interviewed Valve on this subject), the studio considers that « the entire PC catalog is our exclusive launch ». An open philosophy, counter-intuitive next to competing consoles.
• The Steam Frame (Valve's PC VR headset) is approaching: the studio has received three massive shipments (~19 tons combined) planned for the imminent launch.

Analysis

Two possible readings.

Optimistic. Valve's « PC + living room » bet is paying off. PC gamers (target audience) appreciate a pre-configured machine that avoids Windows issues while keeping their Steam library intact. It's not a PS5-type success (which sells millions), but a solid niche success - like the Steam Deck before it.

Cautious. The Steam Hardware Survey is not representative in a statistical sense - it only concerns players who agree to participate. And « steady » is not « massive ». The real data will be visible in the usage tiers reported by developers, or by the telemetry of popular games. Since Valve is private, no public financial report will decide.

What this changes

If the launch is confirmed, we can expect:

• Increased communication from Valve on Proton compatibility (the key argument for the Steam Machine).
• Partnerships with peripherals: gamepad, headset, etc.
• An acceleration of the Steam Frame (VR) launch, now that the Steam Machine holds the living room showcase.

To follow

The real test will come at Christmas 2026. A premium machine that holds its course on a summer launch is encouraging; it needs to pass the gift period against the PS5 and the Xbox to prove its commercial autonomy.
