God of War: Laufey dated for February 16, 2027 - and Kratos returns in the wake

At SDCC 2026, Sony officially announced the release date of the spin-off centered around Faye and confirmed that a new chapter featuring Kratos will follow, directly connected to the events of Laufey.

Sony took advantage of the San Diego Comic-Con to unveil God of War: Laufey. The release date is now official: February 16, 2027, exclusively on PlayStation 5. Santa Monica Studio shared an unprecedented preview of the gameplay and artistic direction, with Faye - Atreus' mother - as the playable protagonist.

Second announcement, more strategic: the next "canonical" God of War is already in development, with Kratos back as the main character. The studio confirmed on stage that Faye's story in Laufey directly ties in to what awaits her husband in the next installment. In other words: Laufey is not an anecdotal side-story, it's a narrative prologue to the return of the Ghost of Sparta.

Analysis - what this changes for the saga

We watched the conference live and it blew us away: Sony is playing on both fronts at the same time. On one hand, a game that pushes the saga towards a secondary but essential character (Faye has been the central enigma of the Nordic games so far - her death opens God of War 2018, her Jötnar origins are a red thread of Ragnarök). On the other hand, the assurance that the commercial pillar of the brand - Kratos - is not being put on the shelf either.

The bet is clever. After Ragnarök (2022), Santa Monica had to avoid two pitfalls: overcooking the Kratos/Atreus formula, or losing its audience by moving too far away from the iconic figure. Laufey as a spin-off + main sequel in parallel, it's the exact playbook that worked for The Last of Us Part II (new characters, but Joel/Ellie still in the DNA).

What we still don't know

• No title for Kratos' next adventure, nor even an approximate release window.
• No word on a possible PC version of Laufey. Given PlayStation's recent strategy (PC ports 2-3 years after the PS5 exclusive - God of War 2018 on PC in January 2022, Ragnarök in September 2024), we'll probably have to wait until mid-2029.
• The combat system of Laufey was only shown very partially - Faye wields an axe (the one that will become the Leviathan?) but the style is not set in stone.

Who it's for

For fans of the Nordic saga who have devoured Ragnarök and want to delve into the Jötnar lore. Newcomers will probably wait more calmly for Kratos' return.

Note: 8.5/10 (on the announcement, not on the game - we'll judge with the controller). To remember: Laufey is not an orphan spin-off. It's the first half of a diptych that brings Kratos back to the forefront.
