  • TRS-80, Kaypro, Osborne 1 - the CP/M pro micros of the 1980s.
  • Then, much later, in Japanese arcades, synthesizers (Roland, Yamaha), barcode readers, even in TI-8x graphing calculators - the Z80 never really stopped being produced.

Why This Chip Mattered

What the Z80 did, at the end of the day, was democratize programming. Not because it was the most powerful - the 6502 from MOS Technology kept up with it continuously at Apple, Commodore, and Atari - but because it was affordable, well-documented, and present in home computers. We learned assembly on this chip, often because the built-in BASIC wasn't fast enough for smooth horizontal scrolling, and we had to get our hands dirty.
