Ayaneo Next 2 at $530: the premium handheld drift reaches new heights

The Next 2 configurator now has a checkbox that pushes the price to $5,300. A statement of intent rather than a machine, and an excellent barometer for the premium handheld PC bubble watch.

What's happening

Ayaneo has updated the online configurator for its Next 2 - the high-end successor to the Next range - and its maximum version, with all options checked, now exceeds $5,300 US. We are indeed talking about a handheld designed to play a Steam game by holding the device with both hands on a couch.

Where the thread is at

This post enriches the thread handhelds-premium-derive that we have been following for several editions. Recap of the signal tracked: premium PC handhelds are pushing their high-end versions into a price range that has nothing to do with a portable console, and everything to do with the technological luxury item.

To situate:

• Steam Deck OLED (Valve), the price/value reference, caps at €679 for the 1TB model.
• ROG Ally X (Asus), the serious Windows alternative, hovers around €899.
• Ayaneo Next 2 in its maximum version: $5,300, approximately 7 to 8 times the price of a Steam Deck OLED, without the game library being fundamentally different.

What you pay for this price

According to the configurator: high-end APU, maxed RAM and NVMe storage, premium screen, fast charger, accessories, possibly a dock. It's a strictly material addition: nothing software, nothing exclusive to the product, nothing that brings to the game what a Deck does not.

The contrast with Valve

The timing gives even more relief to this drift: Valve has specified (see our articles in the thread valve-hardware-2026) that the Steam Machine 2 will arrive without exclusive games, in a "SteamOS in your living room" positioning - a strategic choice that plays the card of the existing catalog, Proton, and a controlled price. Two opposing visions:

• Ayaneo: move upmarket, add options, target a public of enthusiasts who are willing to pay for the object itself.
• Valve: stay on a defendable price/experience compromise, anchored in its software ecosystem.

For whom, frankly

At this price, for no one who just wants to play. The high-end Next 2 falls into the category of collector's accessory, gadget for a tech-savvy public, or very specific tool (heavy retro-gaming, demanding Switch/PS3 emulation on the go, high-quality remote streaming). For everything else, the same amount buys a very high-end desktop PC and several Steam Deck OLEDs as gifts.

Note: 3/10 as a rational product. To remember in a one-liner: a handheld at $5,300, that's the moment when the market officially slipped. For whom: collectors of premium tech objects, almost exclusively.
