Arise Dark Lord: Raise your undead army on a Tolkien-style map

Arise Dark Lord is an action-RTS indie game that puts you in the role of the villain: stylized Lord of the Rings map, undead army to build, humans to exterminate. We're hooked.

Playing the villain is always a good idea

Rock Paper Shotgun got their hands on Arise Dark Lord, an independent hybrid action-RTS with a concept that immediately caught our attention: you are the Dark Lord, and your sole objective is to exterminate humanity at the head of an undead army.

The art direction is the first thing that stands out. The game presents its world on a map styled like a Tolkien map—sepia tones, hand-drawn lines, fantasy typography—which instantly gives it a strong and distinctive visual identity in a genre often generic.

How it plays

Arise Dark Lord blends two genres:

  • Action: you directly control your Dark Lord in combat, both up close and at range
  • RTS (Real-Time Strategy): you build and manage your undead army, set attack lines, and exploit the terrain

This isn’t the first time someone has attempted this fusion—think of Overlord (2007) or more recently certain modes in Total War—but Arise Dark Lord seems to strike a smoother balance between the two gameplay modes based on early feedback.

The 'villain simulator' genre

Games where the player takes on the role of the villain have always had a dedicated audience. From *Dungeon Keeper* (1997, Bullfrog) to *Evil Genius* and *Overlord*, the fantasy of world domination has a long history in video games.

Why we're interested

The indie angle here is a real asset. No marketing compromises, no visible microtransactions in the screenshots, a cohesive artistic vision. The positioning—fantasy map + sympathetic villain + hybrid gameplay—is sharp enough to avoid direct comparisons with RTS giants.

We haven’t been able to play it yet, but the trailer and RPS’s description convince us this is a title worth watching. An indie game with a true visual identity and a clear concept is exactly what we love to champion.

To remember: Arise Dark Lord, 8/10 in intent even before getting our hands on it. For whom: fans of Overlord, Warcraft III, and everything that happens on the dark side of fantasy.
